Top Talent to Watch!

Again this year Sherston Boules Festival has attracted some top teams in the Open Section:

  • Two thirds of last year’s winners (Phil Bradshaw and Alex Moriarty) will be defending their winners’ title, this time with a “superstar” (their expression) from France.
  • London Petanque traditionally bring teams to Sherston and this year they are mob handed, led by Monty Quaia, a young but seasoned England international player. London have entered three teams.
  • England international Steve Daykin will captain a team of French visitors, at Sherston for the first time and to whom we shall extend a warm welcome.
  • Team Wales will be here again, albeit the lineup is different from that of a few years ago.
  • Alan McInnes of Minety will again bring his Bouledogs, finalists at Sherston two years ago, and one of the most consistent teams in the region.
  • Mike Curd’s Northey Cannyboules from Corsham are sure to be a handful as will Jerome Rousseau and Piquet’s Players
  • The hugely experienced Mark Gay and his Cassanis could be a dark horse in this section.

The Local Section is harder to predict although;

  • Last year’s winners (Nick Brock and his No Sharking) will probably fancy their chances but
  • The Liddington boys (Run the Boules) are likely to challenge that idea.
  • Nick Blows (Boules a la Blows) won the Plate competition last year and would probably like to go one better
  • The consistent Kenny’s Heroes, as usual led by the vastly experienced Shane Willetts, can never be discounted
  • Baggie Boule could be a dark horse in this section
  • An interesting match up sees Sprout Graders take on Widley Trio in the first round
  • Almost all of our sponsors have kindly put teams in and, as usual, they will play each other at first before some venture deeper into the rounds. We are, as always most grateful to them for their sponsorship.
